"Frontiers" have held a critical geopolitical and cultural place in Chinese history and figure significantly in contemporary China's domestic policies, world view, and global relations. This four-part webinar/discussion series offers an interdisciplinary introduction to images and realities of three historical frontiers--now Autonomous Regions--Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet. It will introduce histories, cultures, national government policies and current tensions and issues. Participants will take part in four webinars and have the opportunity to discuss topics and resources in online, asynchronous forums offered via Moodle.

The course consists of three components:

* Four weekly webinars with instructor Jonathan Lipman: October 11, 18, 25 and November 1, 6:30-8:30 ET.

* Required and suggested readings for each topic.

* Required discussion forum via this Moodle site to share your thoughts on the readings or the lectures, recommend resources, or ask questions following each webinar.

Participants who complete the course receive a $50 stipend and certificate for 16 contact hours. Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents to receive the stipend.
