"Frontiers" have held a critical geopolitical and cultural place in Chinese history and figure significantly in contemporary China's domestic policies, world view, and global relations. This three-part webinar/discussion series offers an interdisciplinary introduction to images and realities of three historical frontiers--now Autonomous Regions--Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet. It will introduce histories, cultures, national government policies and current tensions and issues. Participants will take part in three webinars and contribute to weekly discussion in online, asynchronous forums offered via Moodle.
The course consists of three components:
* Three weekly webinars with instructor Jonathan Lipman: October 1, 8, and 15. Note that Webinar 1 on October 1 will run from 6:30-8:45, ET. Webinars 2 and 3 will run 6:30-8:15 ET. Attendance at live webinars is required unless otherwise arranged with instructors prior to the webinar.
* Required and suggested readings for each topic.
* Required discussion forum via this Moodle site to share your thoughts on the readings or the lectures, recommend
resources, or ask questions following each webinar.
Participants who complete the course receive a $50 stipend and certificate for 15 contact hours. Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents to receive the stipend.
